That’s more than just a stick! As a nearly vintage typographer myself, I can make a good guess that this is an instrument used to gauge and correctly space type on a straight line! Those of you who used rub-on type before the digitized era will immediately remember the need to correctly set type so that characters that are made up of vertical lines, curves and complex edges such as the right hand side of E or either side of X and W appear balanced in spacing. Those of you not professionally involved with the need to carefully hand-space your letters may already be aware of kerning functions in some programs using keyboard shortcuts such as ‘command-bracket’ and so forth. The technology may change, but the need to hand-set headlines still persists with the pursuit of the perfectly lettered line!
